DByte 12.0 · Getting started
Platform support
Host support and target support are separate claims. DByte v12.0.0 ships a Windows x64 host bundle; Linux and macOS host distributions are not released in this version.
00 current host distribution§
| Host | v12.0.0 | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Windows x64 | SUPPORTED | Official dbyte-v12.0.0-windows-x64.zip bundle and documented install path. |
| Linux x86_64 | NOT RELEASED | No official v12.0.0 Linux host binary or install procedure. |
| macOS | NOT RELEASED | No official v12.0.0 macOS host binary or install procedure. |
DO NOT INFER HOST SUPPORT: the implementation language, an ELF writer, or a freestanding target does not turn Linux and macOS into supported compiler hosts.
10 current execution · target profiles§
| Profile | v12.0.0 | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| hosted tree | DOCUMENTED | Runs through the hosted interpreter semantics. |
| bytecode VM | DOCUMENTED | Runs through the hosted VM path. |
i686-dbyte-none | DOCUMENTED | Freestanding/kernel profile; privileged native operations are profile-gated. |
i686-dbyte-user | DOCUMENTED | User profile; syscall surface is separated from kernel-only native operations. |
x86_64-dbyte-none | DEFERRED | Proposed v12.3 target. |
x86_64-dbyte-windows | DEFERRED | Proposed v12.3 userspace target. |
x86_64-dbyte-linux | DEFERRED | Proposed v12.3 Linux userspace target. |

30 Linux · macOS today§
There is no current official install recipe because no v12.0.0 host distribution exists for either platform. Do not publish a fake curl | sh path, rename a freestanding ELF target as Linux support, or claim a source build as a supported host without a tagged contract and repeatable verification.
Linux is tracked as a proposed modern native target under historical v12.3 Modern Native plan (superseded by v12.2). That page is design intent, not shipped capability.
40 host != target§
HOST
where dbyte / dbytec execute
TARGET
what machine / ABI the compiler emits for
WINDOWS x64 HOST
!= Win64 native target proof
ELF32 OUTPUT
!= Linux userspace support
FREESTANDING i686
!= Linux host support
The canonical semantics remain shared. Profile and target layers choose available capabilities and physical ABI details; they do not redefine language meaning.
50 proof required before a platform becomes supported§
release artifact identity
exact version output
host smoke test
compiler + VM parity
native object/image inspection
exact stdout + exit status
deterministic rebuild where claimed
ABI-specific positive tests
ABI-specific negative tests
platform I/O proof
published verifier entrypoint
CURRENT CONTRACT: DByte 12.0.0. Future x86_64/Linux/Windows rows stay future tense until a later tagged release promotes them.
